NATIONAL BOARD OF LWV APPROVES SANIBEL LEAGUE


The LWV of the US granted full league status to the former SANIBEL MAL UNIT on June 14, 2010.

 

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, has fought since 1920 to improve our systems of government and impact public policies through citizen education and advocacy. The League's enduring vitality and resonance comes from its unique decentralized structure. The League is a grassroots organization, working at the national, state and local levels.


There are Leagues in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Hong Kong, in addition to the hundreds of local Leagues nationwide. The League of Women Voters of the United States and the League of Women Voters Education Fund operate at the national level with grassroots support from state and local Leagues.


The League of Women Voters is strictly nonpartisan; it neither supports nor opposes candidates for office at any level of government. At the same time, the League is wholeheartedly political and works to influence policy through advocacy. It is the original grassroots citizen network, directed by the consensus of its members nationwide. The 900 state and local Leagues comprising a vast grassroots lobby corps that can be mobilized when necessary.

Making a Difference: Florida Prepares to Vote in 2010
Florida Public Broadcasting and the Florida League of Women Voters Plan Historic Gubernatorial Debate Focused on Healthcare with the Florida Hospital Association as the Event Host

Governor's Race:

For almost fifty years, Florida Public Broadcasting Stations have continually proven the power of public media through programs and services; striving to engage citizens in today's vital issues; strengthen our democracy and enrich Florida communities. The League of Women Voters of Florida, a non partisan organization, brings a wealth of knowledge to this partnership and will help create a debate that focuses on topics crucial to Florida citizens.


FPBS will produce and broadcast a live statewide gubernatorial debate to be simulcast on PBS television and NPR radio Thursday, October 14, 2010. The Florida Hospital Association and its members will be the exclusive sponsor of this prime time event, hosting the debate at their annual conference at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando. With the support of the Florida Hospital Association, Florida citizens will hear answers to questions on healthcare and economic issues important to Florida.

Senate Race:

Florida stations are in the process of planning the U.S. Senate debate and are considering several sites across Florida to hold this important event. The Florida League of Women Voters will again partner in this project to ensure Florida citizens receive the information they need to make an informed decision on the day they vote. More details will be released later this summer.
